This fine hostelry is actually the home of Stilton Thornhill, who was landlord at The Bell Inn from 1730 to 1759, and who originally served this delicious crumbly 'blue' cheese to his customers. (Cambridgeshire, East Anglia)

According to local legend, Bridge House was built over Stock Beck in an attempt to avoid paying land tax, but was probably built in the 16th century by the owners of Ambleside Hall, to connect the Hall with the orchards that lay on the other side of the stream. (Cubria, North West)
